You really hit on some of my neighborhood favorites! I love Back Forty's short rib hash for brunch. In terms of Vietnamese food, you really can't go wrong with Saigon Grill right around the corner on University. I've been to Safron and it was a little too fusiony for my taste. Definitely try Saigon next time you are in town!

nyc, best food ever. well and brooklyn too.

I just discovered your blog and am so excited...for both you and me: I have found your treasure trove of a blog, and YOU are on the eve of ein tolles Abenteuer! I lived in Berlin for a couple of years and it influenced me in untold ways I'm still discovering. Your list of favorite NYC restaurants inspired me to share with you my two favorite restaurants in Berlin:
Kaffehaus Sowohlalsauch (www.tortenundkuchen.de/) has the most divine Torten and Fruehstueck. Their corner location in Prenzlauerberg is perfect for people-watching and soaking in the sun. To me it is the quintessential Berliner Cafe. My other favorite is Cafe Chagall in the S-Bahn-Bogen right behind Humboldt Uni. Their Borscht and Schtchi soups are delicious and will warm you up during the months of damp cold winter. The pelmini is also fantastic and the Chagall-inspired ceiling artwork is great. I adore this cafe and brought every single guest I had here for dinner. They don't have a website as far as I can tell, and I can't speak for the second location near Senefelderplatz. But in case you need somewhere to go while settling in to your new home, you can't go wrong with these two! Guten Appetit und viel Spass!

Thanks for putting this list together- I am planning a trip to NYC this winter, and will have to try several of these. Also, I have to say that I absolutely love your photograph at the beginning of this post.

here are details of my favorite bahn mi in NYC: http://upchefcreek.com/2009/09/09/dear-bahn-mi-saigon-bakery/
i cannot wait to try the cambodian version. Thank you! My Brooklyn Restaurant List is coming along, still have Manhattan and Queens to start typing... have a look if you would like.

Your list is awesome and your photography rocks. I was particularly interested in teh kabobs since I am working on a project to bring kabobs to grocery retail.
Thanks for your awesome site.
Tim

Your photography rocks! I am working on a project introducing kabobs to the retail marketplace and enjoyed the photos along with your list. Also, congrats on your placement on Times list. It is how i found you.

Mouth watering. Dying over the fact that I haven't been to NYC for almost 3 years...makes my heart (and my tummy) ache. Some of my favorites: Country (the cafe downstairs) has the most divine pommes puree and roasted chicken - so simple, but so tasty. And a chocolate truffle cookie dough frozen custard from Shake Shack. I'm still mourning the loss of Kouign Aman from Fauchon. Oh, I just have to stop, it's too sad!!

Great list! I love places I've never heard of or heard very little of, and can't wait to try some of these next time I'm in NYC. I loved Extra Virgin last weekend, but Scarpetta? Not so much:)

Recently recalled reading this entry last year so I pulled it up as a reference on a recent trip to NY - Thank you! Any thoughts about a similar list for Berlin?

Amanda - I'm working on it! :)
