On my lunch break today, I hopped into a cab and zoomed over to Chelsea Market, where Oxo is having a two-day sample sale (if you're in the city and want to go, it's on the 5th floor of Chelsea Market, and goes from 11:00 to 4:00 today and tomorrow).
They are selling everything a kitchen junkie will go mad for and drool over, like cutting boards, apple corers, oyster knives, flexible spatulas, potato mashers, and barbecue sets. Ben arrived just a few moments after I did, but by the look of my stuffed-to-the-brim box, I could have been there for hours.
With a heartless look on his face and churlish curl of the lip, he went through my box and tossed things out left and right.
Endlessly useful jam jar scraper? Gone.
Must-have candy and deep-fry thermometer? Goodbye.
Adorable metal measuring spoons? Good riddance.
Luckily, I managed to hold on to and rationalize a bagful of things (gasping for air because my personal kitchen-gadget money-manager made me laugh very hard as I was doing so) that you see pictured above. Meat tenderizer! Ladle! Oven thermometer! Bench scraper! Citrus reamer! Egg timer! Dough blender! Pastry brush! Measuring cups! And last but not least, organic flax seed grinder!
I tell you, it's the best $35 I've spent in a while. And Ben? Thanks for keeping my damage to a minimum. Can't wait to pound you some chicken breasts! With ground flaxseeds on top!

OMG! There's a sample sale on kitchen supplies and there's stuff left? There's really still stuff on the shelves? I know what I'm doing tomorrow!

I must compliment you for buying such sensible things! I don't know what I would do without my meat tenderizer for example! Money well spent! And I mean it!

Georgia - there was a continuously refreshed pile of stuff yesterday, so I'm assuming today will be the same. Have fun!
Ilva - oh, I'm so glad that you think they're sensible purchases! I do, too. Ben and I were quite the comedy act yesterday - me hanging on tightly to my coveted utensils, him pulling them away to throw back on the sale table.

Oh no, I'm seeing this just a few hours too late! Looks like a major score--congratulations!

I'm dealing with the untensil envy.
Too bad you didn't hang on to that candy thermometer -they are excellent for preserve-making. But perhaps you don't want to make jam?
In truth, my daughter is the only other person I know, apart from the internet, who also makes jam. And many people look at me with what can only be pity when they find out I do this.
That pounder is cool. Also, the flaxseed grinder.
