It was gray and rainy the other weekend, but the three of us were going stir-crazy at home and someone wasn't holding up his end of the bargain with his afternoon nap and we were starting to feel like parental failures, so we piled in the car and got on the Autobahn for Neukölln instead, figuring he'd sleep in the car and then we'd run him ragged around the Tempelhofer Feld, with a bit of ice cream in between to keep everyone happy.
Isn't it nice when every once in a while your parenting decisions work out? The boy slept in the car, both through the car wash and down the highway, and we found a parking spot in front of Mos Eisley, which is on the lovely Herrfurthplatz in Neukölln, just a quick stroll away from the Tempelhofer Freiheit.
The gelateria was oddly deserted for a Saturday afternoon, but maybe that's not their busy time. All the better for us. I tried the mint-chocolate sorbet, because I am a sucker for mint and chocolate, but I confess that I need a baseline of cream for the flavor combination to really make me happy. The sorbet was too...elegant, I think, and also a little sour. I settled on a scoop of chocolate, which was a smidge too sweet (sorry for being all Goldilocks) for my taste (however, Hugo loved it and made me trade it for his scoop of stracciatella, which he then also insisted on eating. TODDLERS.) But. BUT! The passion-fruit coconut ice cream, which we ordered on our second round (all credit for this genius decision goes to my husband, who was born into a family of ice cream aficionados who think nothing of eating one cone and then going back for another right away), was delicious. Sour and creamy at once, cooling and tropical and lovely. (Also, it's vegan, if you care about that kind of thing or are lactose-intolerant.) Ooh, I loved it very much.
And then the sun came out and we ran our little guy ragged on the Feld, which he loved and we loved and it turned out to be a very good day after all.
